Mar 29th 2010 - Version 7.3.3.5610/5611

  • Overview: This update contains performance optimizations for large installations (>1000 sensors) as well as  bugfixes
  • New: Optimizations for large installations (thousands of sensors and more)
    • On installations with thousands of sensors PRTG's Web GUI felt sluggish under certain conditions
    • Thanks to various internal optimizations and an optional "speed mode" (see below) web pages can now be generated 5-50 times faster (compared to V7.3.2 or earlier)
    • Our test installations with 10.000 and 20.000 sensors now deliver all web pages (except for sensor lists) in less than 1 second (down from 5-30 seconds)
  • New "Speed mode" switch: When enabled (see System Settings|Webserver Settings) the following aspects of the software will change:
    • Slower updates for the data displayed in the web interface: It can now take up to 60 seconds for a new sensor state (up/down) to be displayed in the web interface (alerts/notifications will still be sent instantly) (Web GUI und Windows GUI)
    • Web GUI does not alert for new todos in the browser window (todo emails will still be sent instantly)
    • Web GUI does not dispay the mini graphs for sensors and at the top of the window
    • Web GUI does not show sensor-tree related menu items (devices by group, sensors by tag, sensors by type, sensors by group)
  • New: "Security Context" for reports (security improvement for reports): You can now select a user account for each report that will be used when creating HTML and PDF reports. Reports will only contain objects (devices, sensors, etc.) which the selected user is allowed to view. By default it is the user who has initially created this report (administrators are able to change this setting).
  • Changed: Improved memory handling when saving configuration (some users saw an out-of-memory error while the configuration was written to the disk)
  • Bugfix: Removed a potential deadlock in the dependency processing
  • Bugfix: For some users the PDF generator and config-check tool did not work due to spaces in pathnames

  • Security: Disabled re-negotiation for TLS authentications (applies to SSL connections used in probe/core connections as well as HTTPS webserver connections). This blocks a potential man-in-the-middle vulnerability which is common for many software products that support SSL (see http://www.scribd.com/doc/22482841 or http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2009-3555 for details)

Sep 21st 2009 - Version 7.2.1.4609/4610

  • Overview: This is a new relase with many new features and changes
  • New: Windows GUI
    • Especially for larger installations (500 sensors and more) the Windows based user interface is faster and more comfortable when managing sensors. The WinGUI includes all features of the former Tray Tool plus interactive editing of objects. It can be installed and used on multiple computers at once. You can continue to use the classic web-based interface, too.
    • Connects to a PRTG Core Server through HTTP/HTTPS (using our own PRTG API)
    • Displays the device tree, sensor list, alarms list, maps, reports etc.
    • Allows to add/edit/delete sensors, groups, and devices
    • Allows to arrange groups, devices and sensors using drag&drop
    • Allows to compare live data, graphs and historic data tables of two or more sensors
    • Alerts you with popup dialogs and/or sound alarm when events occur on the PRTG server
  • Additional Sensor Types
    • Support for sFlow and Netflow 9 (including support for NetFlow 9 on Cisco ASA)
    • QoS (Quality of Service) sensor measures vital network connectivity parameters like jitter, packet loss, and packet delay variation between two probes - the perfect tool to find network issues that can affect VoIP sound quality or video streaming hickups. Some vendors would call this a "VoIP Sensor".
    • IP SLA Sensor (monitors results of IP-SLA on Cisco routers, some would call this a "VoIP Sensor", too)
    • Amazon CloudWatch Sensor uses data from Amazon's CloudWatch service to monitor EC2 instances
    • Sensors for servers running Microsoft HyperV
    • RADIUS Server Sensor
    • Syslog and SNMP Trap receiver sensor
    • Sensors for Microsoft Exchange 2007 and more detailed monitoring of Exchange 2003
  • Improved Web-based User Interface
    • Multi Object Editing feature (e.g. edit the interval of 2 or more sensors at once)
    • Improved multi edit menu in tables of sensors, maps, reports, etc.
    • Improved "S" view for groups for large installations
    • User can select an icon for each device
    • You can now select two or more items from a search result to work on them
    • Toplists now show Pie Charts
    • Maps have a refresh icon at the bottom left, refresh interval can be set to 10/30/60 seconds
    • "Map Rotation" feature: The map display rotates through selected maps (select two or more maps from the list of maps and choose "Map Rotation" from the multi edit menu)
    • And many more
  • Improved Reporting
    • To improve reporting we have added new templates (Top 100 Lowest/highest sensor values, Top 100 best/worst uptime) as well as the following new default reports:
      • Top 100 Busy/Idle Processor Sensors
      • Top 100 Uptime/Downtime Report
      • Top 100 Fastest/Slowest PING Sensors
      • Top 100 Most/Least Used Bandwidth Sensors
      • Top 100 Most/Least Used Memory Sensors
    • Now also the Sensor selection for a report can be filtered by tag (e.g. to only include PING sensors in a report) and you can create "Working Hour" Reports (a schedule can be assigned to a report, data is only used for specified hours of day/week). And we have added new reports templates that only show data tables without graphs.
  • New: "Historic Data" feature allows to dig into the historic data for a specific time frame. You can display or export the raw data (each single monitoring request) as well as averaged data (exports to HTML, XML, CSV)
  • New: "Acknowledge Alarm" feature: Sensors with error state can be marked as "acknowleged". User can enter a message which is shown with the username as long as the error state goes on (e.g. this allows to show a "I will handle this" message in sensor lists). As soon as an alarm has been acknowledged, no further escalation notifications will be send for this sensor.
  • Updated: Improved "Unusual Detection": Detection has been simplified and now looks at hour of day and day of week
  • PRTG has been certified for the official "Works with Windows 2008 Server" logo by Microsoft
