Netflow 5 Filter Parameters supported by PRTG Traffic Grapher

This article explains the traffic parameters that can be used to filter traffic when NetFlow based bandwidth monitoring is used.

A Brief Introduction to Netflow

The NetFlow protocol is supported by most Cisco routers and certain Cisco switches in order to measure bandwidth usage. These devices can be configured to send data streams with the network?s usage data to the machine running PRTG which can then analyze the data. As such, Netflow can give you information on where, why, how and by whom specific applications are being used and how the usage might affect the network.

Note: In order to use NetFlow sensors you must run a license that includes NetFlow monitoring as well as NetFlow Collector add-on licenses.

For each device that you want to monitor you need an individual NetFlow Collector. However, each Netflow Collector can be equipped with multiple sensors, discerning different information per sensor. Although being the most complex type of sensor to set up it is also the most powerful method suitable for high traffic networks and can also classify and filter network traffic by IP address, protocol, and other parameters, as outlined below.

Filter Parameters for Netflow 5 as supported by PRTG
SourceIP Defines the Source IP of the data.
SourcePort Defines the Source Port of the data.
SourceASI Defines the Source Autonomous System ID of the data.
DestinationIP Defines the Destination IP of the data.
DestinationPort Defines the Destination Port of the data.
DestinationASI Defines the Source Autonomous System ID of the data.
Protocol Defines the Protocol used to transfer the data.
InboundInterface Defines the Inbound Interface Number respective to the data.
OutboundInterface Defines the Outbound Interface Number respective to the data.
ToS Defines the Type of Service Byte. The content depends on the system used

Each of these parameters can be used / defined in context to a Netflow collector sensor. Using the 'Help' functionality in the 'Filter' dialog of PRTG, one will find an overview as regards nomenclature and setup for specific functionality depending on the parameter selected.
