When an Exchange server begins to perform poorly, it is often because the performance of a particular subsystem has begun to degrade. For a mail server such as Exchange, performance degradation always has the symptoms of rising mail queues, poor client response, or rising Epoxy queues.

  • Local Queue Length: 'smtp srvr local queue length' (SNMP Helper Pro only) indicates the number of messages in the SMTP queue for local delivery. The maximum value should be less than 1,000.The queue should remain steady near its average with small variance.
  • Remote Queue Length: 'smtp srvr remote queue length' (SNMP Helper Pro only) Indicates the number of messages in the SMTP queue for remote delivery. The maximum value should be less than 1,000. The queue should remain steady near its average with small variance.
  • Categorizer Queue Length: 'smtp srvr categorizer queue length' (SNMP Helper Pro only) indicates the number of messages in the SMTP queue for directory services attribute searches. The maximum value should be less than 10.
  • Mailbox Store Send Queue Size: 'ism send queue size' (SNMP Helper Extension for Exchange only) indicates the number of messages in the mailbox store's send queue. The send queue size should be less than 500 at all times.
  • Mailbox Store Receive Queue Size: 'ism receive queue size' (SNMP Helper Extension for Exchange only) indicates the number of messages in the mailbox store's receive queue. The send queue size should be less than 500 at all times.
  • Public Folder Store Send Queue Size: 'isp send queue size' (SNMP Helper Extension for Exchange only) indicates the number of messages in the public folder's send queue. In a server with no mail-enabled public folders, it should be below 10. Otherwise, it should be below 500 at all times.
  • Public Folder Store Receive Queue Size: 'isp rcv queue size' (SNMP Helper Extension for Exchange only) indicates the number of messages in the public folder's receive queue. It should be below 500 at all times.
  • RPC Requests: 'is rpc requests' (SNMP Helper Extension for Exchange only) indicates the number of MAPI RPC requests presently being serviced by the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service. It should be below 30 at all times.
  • RPC Averaged Latency: 'is rpc averaged latency' (SNMP Helper Extension for Exchange only) indicates the RPC latency in milliseconds, averaged for the past 1024 packets. It should be below 50 ms at all times.

Many Exchange-related counters you'll want to monitor are listed in Appendix B, "Performance Counter Definitions" of the Exchange Server 2003 Performance and Scalability Guide (www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/exchange/2003/library/perfscalguide.mspx).

When you are ready to monitor your servers, Troubleshooting Exchange Server 2003 Performance includes several performance counters and their acceptable thresholds (www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/exchange/2003/library/e2k3perf.mspx
